SUMMARY:Wairau Estuary - Community restoration
DESCRIPTION:The Wairau Estuary in Milford is connected to the inland Wairau Valley Catchment\, which stretches several kilometres into the industrialised and commercial heart of the Wairau Valley. \nExtensive environmental testing has revealed the presence of common contaminants in the watercourse from industrial land\, high traffic roads\, and recreational activities in the estuary.  Despite this\, up to nine native freshwater fish and crustacean species are found in this waterway. \nWith support from the passionate locals in Milford and Castor Bay and technical advice from Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters Team\, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board has committed funding to support a cleaner and healthier Wairau Estuary and beach in Milford. \nConservation Volunteers New Zealand is coordinating with community members and volunteer groups to improve the health of the stream by running rubbish clean-ups and planting days along the edges of the estuary. We’d love to have your help! \nPlease note: All CVNZ staff and volunteers will need to present their vaccine pass on the day in accordance with Auckland Councils COVID-19 Policy.

SUMMARY:Lake Pupuke Puriri Forest Community Hui - Te ngahere puriri o Pupukemoana
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the Lake Pupuke Puriri Forest community hui at 4pm on Wednesday the 25th May 2022 at Milford Kindergarten.\n\nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/lake-pupuke-puriri-forest-community-hui-te-ngahere-puuriri-o-pupukemoana-tickets-302093849837\n\nWe would like to invite the community to come together to help plan for the future restoration of the park’s critically endangered forest ecosystem.\n\n\nSylvan Park and Kitchener Park on the shores of Lake Pupuke\, is the home of the last surviving fragments of the critically endangered Puriri forest ecosystem in this area. Puriri forest was once dominant across the Takapuna Milford area\, cloaking the volcanic soils with thousand year old Puriri\, Karaka and Kohekohe. Bird song rang from the canopy as the birds enjoyed the abundance of nectar and fruits from these magnificent trees\, and the ground crawled with kiwi\, moa and many insects\, geckos and skinks. \nToday local residents are restoring the forest and wildlife by controlling pests and weeds. In the first 3 months of trapping\, 1 resident has removed 32 possums\, and now the forest is starting to regrow and regenerate. The Kohekohe are flowering prolifically for the first time after many years of being devastated by possums. A rat baiting programme has been helping to decrease the number of rats and Residents are also weeding to remove the invasive plant pests trying to take over the park.
