Corporate volunteering

Keeping Tāmaki Makaurau’s natural environment thriving is vital to the health and wellbeing of the region’s people, culture and economy

Contributing to Predator Free 2050 and United Nations Sustainability Goals

Reinvigorate your team, get your hands dirty and give back to nature!
Corporate volunteering is a pillar of corporate social responsibility, but it’s not all about ticking boxes: it is fun team building that delivers tangible positive outcomes for the environment and the community. By participating in grassroots volunteering with Pupuke Birdsong Project you are helping to achieve Aotearoa’s Predator Free 2050 Goals and the United Nations Sustainability Goals:

  • Goal 6 – Clean water and sanitation
  • Goal 11 – Sustainable cities and communities
  • Goal 13 – Climate action
  • Goal 14 – Life below water
  • Goal 15 – Life on land
  • Goal 17 – Partnerships for the goals

How to get involved?

Pupuke Birdsong Project offers a variety of opportunities for corporate groups, and businesses to get involved and become part of the Pupuke Birdsong Project whanau. We understand that not all teams can commit to long-term volunteering, however, we encourage you to consider long-term impactful change only happens with ongoing commitment.

We ask for a contribution to cover the costs of our staff in planning and running your day, and for any additional costs incurred, e.g. rubbish disposal, equipment etc.

Volunteering tasks

Weeding  Weeds can smother and destroy native plants. Different weeds require different methods to prevent regrowth. We will provide full training for each task.

Clearing rubbish from forests and streams  Rubbish harms our land, soil, water, and wildlife. It is an ongoing problem but worse after rains which can wash rubbish into waterways. Working in a group, it can be a satisfying task to clear and rejuvenate our natural spaces.

Planting native trees (May – September)  Trees play a central role in combating climate change by capturing carbon dioxide, supporting biodiversity, managing water cycles and providing aesthetic value – it always feels good to being amongst the trees!

Monitoring and trapping or baiting pests  In alignment with Predator Free 2050, we work to eradicate pests such as rats, possums and hedgehogs. These species inflict severe damage on New Zealand’s wildlife.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • Wet weather gear
  • Suncream and sunhat
  • Gumboots or old shoes
  • Old clothes
  • If the weather is wet the sites can become very muddy
  • Gardening gloves if you have them

No. All tools are provided. We also provide gloves, however if you have gloves please bring them and help us save resources.

The volunteering session will include some scheduled breaks. You are very welcome to provide your choice of refreshments. Alternatively our team can provide simple tea and instant coffee if requested in advance.

Safety is paramount. All work is outside so bad weather can lead to the postponement of the session. We will communicate this to you as soon as possible.

Light weeding jobs require digging and bending. Any heavy lifting can be avoided if necessary. Some jobs involve working  on slopes which some people may find difficult. Please let us know any particular needs any of your group may have and we will do our very best to choose a site and tasks which will work for all.

Reporting your impact on the community and environment

At the end of your volunteering stint, we will provide your company with a unique certificate outlining your contribution to the community and environment.
