Pupuke Birdsong Project is a community-led initiative, umbrellaed by Takapuna North Community Trust, that aims to bring together, support and grow the network of volunteer groups, individuals, schools and organisations working to eradicate pests, help improve water quality and restore our local native habitats in the Northern suburbs of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area.
In July 2019, a pest eradication and environmental restoration plan for Takapuna North was initiated by representatives from local volunteer groups and Auckland Council. The plan was originally named the North Shore Birdsong project but has been changed to Pupuke Birdsong Project to better reflect our area.

The Takapuna North Environmental Coordinator coordinates the implementation of the pest free and restoration plan. Implementation is supported by Takapuna North Community Trust and by a steering group made up of local volunteer groups.
The steering group, which includes representatives from the suburbs of Sunnynook, Castor Bay, Forrest Hill, Milford and Takapuna, assists in guiding the Pupuke Birdsong Project through provision of expert local guidance, feedback and advice to our staff.
Our Environmental Coordinator is currently funded through a grant from the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and partly via the Auckland Council Community Coordination and Facilitation Grant.
The Pupuke Birdsong Project vision can only be achieved through the incredible number of volunteer hours put in by our expanding network of groups, projects, neighbourhoods, individuals, schools and businesses. The network meets quarterly at our Environmental Network Meeting to connect and to share ideas and success stories.
We are working on a number of different programmes as part of our work in the community including:
This is the hub for volunteer environmental restoration groups in Takapuna North. We actively engage in tree planting, predator control, pest plant control, water quality, and community engagement.
