ABOUT US

Who are we ?

Pupuke Birdsong Project is a community-led initiative, bringing together, supporting and growing a dedicated network of volunteer groups, individuals, schools and organisations. We work to eradicate pests, help improve water quality and restore our local native habitats in the Northern suburbs of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area.

Board of trustees

Our board of trustees provides oversight, leadership and strategic direction. They bring a range of skills to ensure we have a clear vision and mission, and provide strong governance to make this happen. 

Tabitha Becroft

Tabitha is an environmentalist and community leader with a background in environmental science. She is known for her conservation work in the North Shore area of Auckland, where she has focused on restoring local parks and waterways. She has previously been on the staff at Pupuke Birdsong Project, and has been Chair of the board since autumn 2025. 

Helen Donovan

Helen is a chartered certified accountant, she worked as a tax accountant in Hong Kong, Singapore and China. In recent years, she ran a family office philanthropy that offers scholarships and provides grants to various initiatives. She co-organised mini rugby festivals for HKU Sandy Bay Rugby Club, she was the team manager of her daughter’s youth rugby teams. She moved to New Zealand in 2024, she is passionate about helping to preserve the environment in the Takapuna area where she lives. She has been Treasurer since autumn 2025. 

Rachael Pates

Rachael has been on the board since 2021. During this time she has taken on the role of Treasurer and temporary Chair. 

Neil Murray

Neil has spent most of his life living in Milford, and practising law as a partner of Armstrong Murray, solicitors in Takapuna. He is the Immediate Past Governor of Rotary District 9910 which includes the North Shore up to Kaitaia, and extends into the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Norfolk Island. He has always immersed himself in the local community, serving at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Takapuna since the day it opened.  As well as the Takapuna Community Facilities Trust, he serves on many trust boards including a number of Rotary trusts, the Age Concern North Shore Charitable Trust, and the North Shore Housing Trust (for the disabled). In between times he is a known cricket tragic. He is the Patron and a Life Member of the Takapuna District Cricket Club, which is about to celebrate its 75th Jubilee, and a Life Member of Harbour Basketball. He has served on the board since 2021. 

Gurdeep Talwar
GT is a Management Consultant and a seasoned governance professional. He sits on several local, regional, national and international committees, panels and boards. He has been a Pupuke Birdsong Project trustee since 2023. 
Kahla Parkash

Kahla is a lawyer with 26 years’ experience, mostly in public service, and has lived in Takapuna since 2011. She has previously served on the boards of an employee union, and charitable and not-for-profit boards in Hamilton and Wellington. She has volunteered as a literacy tutor and served on various law society committees. Kahla joined the board of Pupuke Birdsong Project in autumn 2025. ‘It’s a privilege to have this opportunity to contribute to the North Shore’s community and environment.’
